| Description: Widayat (1923- ; Kutoarjo, Central Java (studied at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI, Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts) in Yogyakarta, Central Java, where he also became a lecturer after graduating. He helped to establish the Pelukis Indonesia Muda (Young Indonesian Artists) group in 1952 in Yogyakarta. In 1960 Widayat received a grant to study ceramics and traditional landscaping in Nagoya, Japan. In 1994 he established the Museum H Widayat located on the grounds of his home in Magelang, Central Java. His works are described as “magical decorative”, with rhythmic repetitions of motifs derived from traditional and primitive art. They are rich in texture, color, and symbolism. Awards: Piagam Anugerah Seni (Indonesia, 1972), ASEAN award (1993). The Ekadasa Rudra (Elevan Howling Destroyers) ceremony is held only once a century in Bali at the Besakih temple on the slopes of Mount Agung to purify the entire universe. It last took place in 1979 and involved thousands of people in months of ritual preparations. At the temple colorfully dressed women climb a steep bamboo ramp to place offerings in the high sanggah tawang (shrine to the heavens). A multiple roofed meru (pagoda) is visible in the upper left.
