Description: Soebroto (1937- ; Tulungagung, East Java) studied at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI, Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts) in Yogyakarta, central Java. he taught at the Sekolah Seni Rupa Indonesia (SSRI, Indonesian School of Fine Art) and at Universitas Udayana, both located in Denpasar, Soebroto’s colourful paintings show stylized scenes of village life based on a grid of black lines, giving his works the appearance of a motile saic or stained-glass window. The bright colors and girl patern are like a stained glass window or tile mosaic. People of different castes live together in harmony. a high priest and his attendant (left of center) meet some well-dressed villages (right of center) in front of an upper class house. Peasant families with produce are at the sides. The quota (bottom) is from the Hindu Bhagavadgita (Song of the Lord), a part of the Mahabharata epic. Kresna, incarnation of Wisnu (God of life and Preservation), advises the hero Arjuna who is reluctant to fight his own relatives: I Brought forth the four great divisions of men, according to their qualities and rituals.
