Balinese cremation artifacts are made of wood, bamboo, cloth, and brightly colored paper so that they can be burned along with the body on its journey to the netherworld. During the royal palebon (cremation) of Ubud’s prince Cokorde Gede Agung Sukawati (1910-1978) in 1979, his mortal remains were carried in a huge procession in a tall bade (tower) to the cemetery and then placed in a black bull patulangan (sarcophagus) where they were burned. A huge nagabanda (binding serpent) escorted his soul to the netherworld. | |||||||||||||||||||||
