Description:
I Ketut Soki (1946- Penestanan, Gianyar, Bali) was among the first group of youngsters to study under Arie Smit (born 1916). He favors bright colors in his paintings which influenced other Young Artists. His works are filled with figures arranged rhythmically. He also includes architectural motifs and decorative foliage to make his works symmetrical. Description:
This more recent Young Artists style painting is highly decorative and more colorful than those created from the early 1960s to 1970s. The emphasis is on the rhythms of repeated forms : farmers in rows facing alternate directions, similiar coconut trees with white birds amidest the fronds, and women carrying bundles of rice or bowls of offerings on their heads. The composition is symmetrical and directed towards the upper center of the painting where a small hut is located. While the immediate impression is what the Balinese call rame (busy, full activities, crowded), the elements are rather stereotypical and lack any sense of artistic uniqueness.
