Han Snel (1925-1998; Scheveningen, Holland) was trained as a graphic artist. Sent to Indonesia in 1946 as a soldier to fight against the nationalists, he defected to their side. Snel lived in Bali since 1950 and was an Indonesian citizen. His graphic paintings featured stylized women in rich colors, as well as geometric abstractions. Exhibition: Itoh Gallery (Tokyo, Japan, 1965).

| Elongated figures of Balinese women carry banten (offerings) on their heads. They extend the full length of the canvas and so seem larger than life. Focus is provided by contrasting colors placed to suggest a source of light. Slow and graceful motion is achieved through slender, vertical units along with strong geometric and organic shapes.
