Dewa Nyoman Batuan (1939- ; Pengosekan, Gianyar, Bali) studied painting under I Gusti Ketut Kobot (born in 1917). In 1970 he established the Pengosekan Community of Artists, known for its paintings of nature. Batuan’s works have geometric compositions filled with images from Balinese religion.Awards : Wija Kusuma (Gianyar, Bali, 1997), Dharma Kusuma (Bali, 1994). Collections : Taman Budaya (Denpasar, Bali), Museum Bali (Denpasar), Fukuoka Art Museum (Japan), Tropenmuseum (Amsterdam, Holland). Exhibitions : Festival of Indonesia (U.S.A., 1990-1992).

Description:
In Hindu symbolism, the lingga (phallus) represents the male creative principle, the yoni (vulva) is the famale creative force. The Balinese figure seen encompassing the sexual act is Ida Sang-hyang Widhi Wasa (The Supreme Deity of Universal Order), placed upon the cosmic tree of life. Swirls represent the five elements: Solids, liquids, energy, radiance, and ethereal space. Monkeys below the humans represents animal disires and also may refer to modern scientific theories of evolution. The two naga (water serpents), symbolic of life and fertility, and the cosmic tortoise Badawang Nala, with only its buck-toothed face visible, lie at the foundation of the Balinese universe and support the cosmic mountain.
